RACHEL ONIGA GO AGAINST COVER UP FOR BABA SUWE BY SOME BIG NOLLYWOOD ACTORS

For some days now, top Yoruba actor, Babatunde Omidina, who is well known as Baba Suwe has been in the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for an alleged drug ingestion offence.

Though the development has been very messy, especially in the first seven days the veteran comic actor had been with the drug enforcement agency, but the new turn of event had made it messier.

Before now, there had been insinuations around that some big wigs in the society who might be linked with the drug offence were fighting hard to die down the case just as it has been allegedly done in the time past.

In some quarters, there were the believe that some top Nollywood heavyweights were trying to cover up for Baba Suwe by making sure he was not expose, and also making a compromise on the issue with some powers that be in high places.

Those insinuating this believe have it that confirming Baba Suwe with the suspected substance would dent the image of the industry, especially for those who enjoy the goodwill of being a celebrity to by-pass the stringent airport searches. This was what they are trying to avoid.

But in a reaction to this insinuation, top Nollywood actress, Rachael Oniga has come out to debunk such believe. According to her, “the point I must tell you is that the serious and professionals among the actors don’t do drugs or get involved in drugs. So, there is no reason for any cover up by some of us to sweep the case under carpet. To my own knowledge, there is nothing of such.”

Those in the know had alleged that some big wigs in the make-believe industry are seriously fighting hard not to expose Baba Suwe of an alleged attempt to traffic substances suspected to be narcotic drug out of the country when he was arrested some days ago by the
NDLEA operatives at the Lagos airport.

This insinuation was further buttressed in a press release by the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP) on Thursday October 20, when the former president of the body, Prince Jide Kosoko said, “the unethical proceedings (of NDLEA) have not only brought untold humiliation, bad press and unprecedented public outcry against Baba Suwe; it has equally brought our industry and all theatre practitioners into public odium.

Everybody in the industry is now seen as a potential drug pusher. This is a tag we reject in its totality. We do not dispute the fact that there are bound to be a few bad ones in a large professional grouping but we make bold to say that we are not drug pushers but hardworking professionals, who have worked hard to earn decent living and the good name we presently enjoy.”

"TONTO DIKEH" A HEART SOLD TO DEVIL

Undoubtedly, one of Nollywood most controversial actress, Tonto Dikeh, who has had a quick rise to fame within a short time in the razzmatazz industry in Nigeria, has thrown herself in the news again.

For this Rivers State born screen beau, who hails from Ikwerre part of the State, swimming in the waters of bad press is not new to her, and as such, she is not concerned about it as she once said that she has grown a very thick skin to whatever anybody writes or says about her.

This position of hers has made people wonder how a lady of her status would not pay a listening ear to what people have been saying about her.

Though some have said that the fact that she was not brought up by her biological mother, who Tonto said died while she was age three, could be the major factor for her nonchalant attitude to life, others have argued that she is not the only person who lost her mother at an early stage in life, so she has no excuse to be controversial.

This time, this lady who almost won the 2006 edition of AMBO Next Movie Star, a reality TV show, is being alleged to have been sold to the devil.

This allegation is coming courtesy of a tattoo picture of Tonto on her back, which she posted on Twitter on October 25. The said picture has generated lots of comments and arguments among fans of this light skinned actress.

A closer look at the controversial photograph reveals a diabolic horn clinched with a set of fingers capping a heart tied with a long hair.
This, as argued by the accusers, is a sign of the devil. They believe that only those that worship, or have a connection with or have sold themselves to the devil carry and bear such sign (horn).

The question on the lips of many is; ‘why would this petrol chemical engineer-cum-actress go this far? Why would she associate herself with the devil, when she should have pitched tent with her maker?’,

ANTP URGE FOR BABA SUE RELEASE AS TWO OTHERS ARRESTED AS SUSPECT

MEMBERS of the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP), led by their former president, Prince Jide Kosoko, have called for the immediate release of the ace comedian, Babatunde Omidina, a.k.a. Baba Suwe, who is currently being held by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

He said Baba Suwe had been made to go through public humiliation, adding that what had been done to him was unjust punishment for an innocent man.

Present at the conference were Gbenga Adewusi, a.k.a. Bayowa; Monsuru Oba-dina, Bukky Wright, Afusat Balogun a.k.a. Madam Saje, Sokoti, Kola Olaiya, Alabi Yellow and others.

Also, the president-elect of the association, Mr Dele Odule, has decried the attitude of NDLEA on Baba Suwe, describing it as a violation of his fundamental human rights.

Meanwhile, the family of the ace comedian has hired the services of a Lagos lawyer, Mr Bamidele Aturu, over his continued detention in NDLEA custody.

The lawyer had also written a letter to the Director-General of the agency, Mr Femi Ajayi, demanding his unconditional release.

The family gave the NDLEA a seven-day ultimatum to tender apology in three national dailies circulating all over Nigeria, while also demanding that Baba Suwe be paid N1 billion as compensation for the damage that the arrest and detention had done to his person and reputation while in the custody.

In another development, two suspected drug traffickers have been arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

NDLEA Airport Commander, Alhaji Hamza Umar, gave the names of the suspects as Ezeanochie Oliver Ndodi, 32, enroute Emirate flight to Malaysia and Amoo Tolase Duro-woju, 27, who was to board Air France to Dublin on October 12.

According to the NDLEA spokesman, Mitchelle Ofo-yeju, both suspects would be charged to court soon.

BABA SUWE TO APPEAR PHYSICALLY IN COURT NOV. 1

A Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has ordered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to bring top comedian and actor, Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as Baba Suwe to court on November 1, 2011.

Baba Suwe, who had been in NDLEA’s detention since October 12, 2011 over alleged possession of cocaine in his system, though series of medical examinations had been performed on him had instituted a N100 million suit against NDLEA over his arrest and detention by the agency, is seeking a declaration that his arrest was in gross violation of his rights.

Delivering her ruling yesterday, the trial judge, Justice Yetunde Idowu ordered the agency to produce the applicant physically in court following an application by Omidina’s counsel, Bamidele Aturu, pursuant to Order IV Rules 3 and 4 of the Fundamental Human Rights Enforcement Procedure Rules 2009 for the unconditional release of his client from NDLEA’s custody pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

He had also asked that the NDLEA should show cause why Baba Suwe should not be released unconditionally from detention. Opposing the application, the agency’s counsel, Femi Oloruntoba stated that series of medical examinations had been carried out since Baba Suwe’s arrest, which revealed that the applicant had a large amount of drug in his stomach, which he would excrete, even if it took a long period of time as it had been so with some of its suspects.

The agency also stated that it was expedient that the applicant was in NDLEA custody to enable them seize the drugs immediately it was expelled as it had been ascertained by a CT scan at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital that the applicant indeed ingested some things suspected to be narcotic drugs. He explained that this was the reason the agency applied for and obtained an order from the Federal High Court extending time to detain the applicant.

Finally, the agency added that they were not opposed to producing the applicant in court but was concerned that crowd control would be a problem. But the trial judge held that the court security would be able to control any crowd and there would not be a problem.

Baba Suwe may turn drug saga to an hillarious film

Rumours are spreading that ace comedian, Baba Suwe, may turn his drug saga in the hands of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, into a comic movie when he is set free.

As the comedian prepares to spend another weekend in NDLEA cell, Nigerians on Facebook have already coined hilarious movie titles for him.
Script writers are suggesting that he titles his Yoruba movie, Igbe Ayeraye (Everlasting Shit), Igbe ti o common (Uncommon Shit) or Moyagbeti (Couldn’t Shit).

Others are advising him to choose Igbe togbayi (Shit of Prestige), Igbe Shoro (Difficult Shit), Igbe ti aye nduro de (The Expected Poo), Igbe ti ki tan (Poo that doesn’t finish) and Igbe t’owon (Expensive Poo).
Some script writers titled it “The Last Shit”, “The Expensive Shit”, “Another Shit”, or “Drug Shit”.

With the disclosure this morning by Mitchell Ofoyeju, NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, that Babatunde Omidina, Baba Suwe’s real name, will remain under observation, hilarious titles for the drug saga movie are likely to skyrocket, giving the comedian a good laugh and a wide range of options and writers to choose from.

Baba Suwe(Babatunde Omidina ) Drug Carrying Latest News

Embattled Lagos based comedian, Babatunde Omidina, also known as Baba Suwe, on Monday urged a Federal High Court in Lagos to vacate an earlier order made by it on October 21, which empowered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to detain him for additional fifteen days.

According to the actor the NDLEA while applying for the order concealed material facts relating to his health and circumstances of his arrest and detention and that the application also contained contradictory facts.

The comedian also stated in the motion filed on his behalf by his counsel, Bamidele Aturu, that the application through which the drug agency obtained the order was grossly irregular and constitutes an incurable abuse of the processes of the court.

Omidina also argued that the application upon which Justice Okechukwu okeke grand the order was contrary to public policy and constitutes wanton violation of his fundamental rights.

Also in a twelve paragraphs affidavit deposed to by the first son of the suspect, olusola omidina, the claimant stated that his father is a diabetic patient and may die in detention if the order of the court is not discharged forthwith.

He maitained that NDLEA did not disclose to the court that the applicant has been detained since the 12th of October 2011 without trial before a court of competent jurisdiction and that he had defecated 3 times without any illegal narcotic substance in his faeces.

The motion is however expected to be heard on October 26.

It will be recalled that Justice O Okeke had granted the request of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to further keep Omidina in custody for 15 more days.

Justice Okeke made the order after entertaining arguments on an ex-parte application from NDLEA’s lawyer, Theresa Asuquo.

The application was supported by a 29-paragraph affidavit deposed to by an NDLEA intelligence officer, Femi Johnson Osifuye and a CT scan result issued by a consultant radiologist with the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Dr Subhash Vijayvargiya.

The result, according to the affidavit, confirmed that Baba Suwe has large amount of narcotic drugs in his body.

The NDLEA, it would be recalled, had arrested the comedian on October 12 while trying to board an Airfrance to Paris on suspicion that the scanning machine at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport indicated that he had ingested substances suspected to be hard drugs.

According to the affidavit, Osifuye averred that following Baba Suwe’s arrest, the man was placed on observation pending when he would defecate the ingested substances, but that while on observation, Baba Suwe refused to eat claiming that he eats only once in three days.

He added that as a result of Baba Suwe’s refusal to eat, he had not excreted the ingested substances.

According to Osifuye, after the comedian made the second excretion and no substance was found, the NDLEA had to take him to LASUTH for another CT scan for a second opinion on whether he indeed ingested the narcotic drugs, and the test confirmed large amount of drugs in his body.

The NDLEA official added that with the confirmation that Baba Suwe still has hard drugs in his stomach, he is bound to excrete it with time, adding that his case was not an isolated one as it takes some suspects a longer time to excrete than others, hence the need to further keep him in custody.

Osifuye, who noted that it would take the comedian about 5 to 7 days to complete excreting the whole drug in his stomach, added that the suspect must be in custody for the agency to retrieve the ingested drugs.

Besides, the agency stressed that it would be in the interest of the suspect to excrete the ingested substances so as to prevent them from bursting in his abdomen, a situation the agency argued might lead to his death.
